Battersea Arts Centre rises from the ashes

Wandsworth Radio’s Arts Editor Lesley Strachan has visited the Battersea Arts Centre Grand Hall for the first time since the fire to see the damage to the building and you can listen to her report on Wandsworth Tonight this Monday at 6.30pm on and on the TuneIn app for smart phones and tablets.

On Friday 13th March earlier this year the Wandsworth Radio news team were about to go on air with the hour long edition of Wandsworth Tonight as they do every Friday. We started hearing reports of about a fire at Battersea Arts Centre. The devastating blaze destroyed the Grand Hall which was the BAC’s biggest performance space. It also destroyed the Lower Hall, the venue where Wandsworth Radio held its first ever meeting of volunteers in May 2013.

Luckily the team at Battersea Arts Centre  managed to keep the majority of the venue open, even putting on a performance the very next day.

The centre received massive support from local people and from across the country with £52,000 donated on their fundraising page during the weekend after the fire. Battersea Power Station and the government also stepped in and gave £100,000 and £500,000. The Phoenix Fund was then set-up and is still raising money to help keep the important work the BAC do in our community.
