Chelsea FC: Factfile

Chelsea Football Club is an English professional football club based in London, who currently compete in the Premier League, which is the top division in English football. The Blues play their games at Stamford Bridge, which holds a capacity of 40,834 and has been their home ever since the club was founded in 1905. As of 2018, Chelsea were the sixth most valuable club in world football. They are currently owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich and club legend Frank Lampard is Chelsea’s current first team manager.

Chelsea joined the Football League in 1905, entering Division Two upon their arrival and have spent their entire history playing in one of the top two flights of English football. During that time the club had a number of notable names play for them including Jimmy Greaves, Peter Osgood, Ron Harris and Kerry Dixon, with the club winning their only First Division title of the 20th century in the 1954-55 season. Chelsea have only competed in the top flight of English football since 1989 and the mid 1990s really saw their fortunes turn for the better. The influx of foreign talent to the Premier League saw Chelsea attract stellar names such as Gianfranco Zola, Marcel Desailly, Gianluca Vialli, Didier Deschamps, Emmanuel Petit and many others as they started to become a greater force in England. However, this was really taken to a new level in 2003 when Abramovich bought the club, turning them into instant contenders across all fronts.

Jose Mourinho was hired as Chelsea manager in 2004 and took the club to new heights, winning back-to-back Premier League titles in his first two seasons as manager in convincing style. The Abramovich money turned Chelsea into big players in the transfer market, with his seemingly never ending flow of cash allowing the London club to attract some of the world’s greatest talents. Job security isn’t something that you would associate with the Chelsea manager’s job though, with current boss Lampard being the 12th man to be named Chelsea boss in the Abramovich era. Lampard played a crucial role on the pitch to establish Chelsea as contenders, forming a strong core of a team that featured the likes of John Terry, Petr Cech, Ashley Cole and Didier Drogba that won a multitude of trophies with the club. This ultimately culminated in the most famous night in the history of the football club when they won the Champions League in 2012, defeating Bayern Munich on penalties in the final that was held at the Bundlesiga side’s Allianz Arena.
