Mayor launches Wandsworth Radio

Wandsworth Radio launched on Monday 12th January with the Mayor of Wandsworth Councillor Stuart Thom being the first to take to the airwaves saying…

“You’re listening to Wandsworth Radio, a new community radio station for the best part of London.

I hope you will enjoy listening to the programmes made by local people for local people and I wish luck to the hundreds of volunteers from across the borough who are taking part as presenters, journalists, producers and technical staff.”

He then went on to declare Wandsworth Radio open and introduced the first song which had a Wandsworth theme. It was by the late American singer songwriter Jimi Jamison and is called Battersea.

Wandsworth Radio could not find any reason why this song was written but were amazed to discover the song which mentions Wandsworth Bridge and Battersea and decided it was the perfect song to launch with.

Meanwhile a party was going on opposite the station studios as councillors, local business people and volunteers at the station gathered at Habanero Bar/Cafe on Battersea Park Road to celebrate the stations launch.

Battersea MP Jane Ellison attended the event and was one of the first to be interviewed. She said she was delighted Wandsworth Radio had chosen Battersea as their base and that the area needed a community radio station as there was always so much going on in her constituency and across the rest of Wandsworth.
