Wanted: Your one hit wonders

One hit wonders are an interesting beast aren’t they? They plop on to the top of the music charts either because the artist manages to squeeze every globule of creative juice they possess in to one tune, or the ears of the outside world are receptive to that particular style of ditty at that particular time.

Your Sugarhill Gangs, your Tasmin Archers, your OMCs or your Deep Blue Somethings. All touched by the one hit wonder fairy, bottling lightning for one utterly sublime moment, grabbing our attention for that briefest of moments. Sure they may have made other tracks. But, who cares. Does anyone ever really say “don’t play Ini Kamoze’s ‘Here Comes The Hotstepper’, ‘World A Music’ was much better”? No, they don’t.

In honour of these classics, The Freewheelin’ Bashmore Show is dedicating its hour to those briefest of musical moments: the one hit wonder. It’s a birthday gift to celebrate Wandsworth Radio’s first birthday – wait, we’re not doing actual gifts are we?

From 7, Bashmore will play the best one hit wonders recommended by you, dear listener. You can add your suggestions to the Bashmore One Hit Wonder playlist on Spotify. Or get yourself over to the Freewheelin’ Bashmore Show page and suggest your one off classic. Then the best get played out. As long as it’s not Chesney Hawkes. He’s not getting played. That song hurts.

The Freewheelin’ Bashmore Show 7-8pm on Wednesday 20th January. One hit wonders. Come get some.
