Julia Bright

I was born and brought up in Hampshire, my father English, my mother Austrian (from the South Tirol). Went to a girls’ High School, won a music exhibition in piano and decided to set off to Vienna to study rather than take up a place at Royal Holloway College. Found jobs there to keep me going, learnt German fluently and came back feeling more European than before. Worked for Cambridge University Press, then publishers Faber & Faber . A couple of years later my career in journalism began, first writing opera reviews freelance for the Guardian and the Sunday Times, then branching into arts features for both newspapers. When offered a fulltime feature-writing job for a new financial newspaper I took it, fervently hoping that the City was not as dull as I’d feared. Indeed it was not!  Different jobs on specialised business magazines followed, happily interspersed with freelance arts pieces for the nationals and some radio work at the BBC and LBC.

LOVE WANDSWORTH: It’s varied with interesting and friendly communities, lovely green spaces and lots going on, with great places to eat and drink.
